Student Government Advisor's overview of the 2006-2007 School Year
August:
Mascot costume ordered
Homecoming Decorations ordered
Meeting with building administration at the Special Services Building
September:
Homecoming Dance date moved up a week to avoid conflict with SAT (from October 14th to October 7th)
Homecoming decorations put together over the course of two afterschool working sessions
Spirit Week events planned
Student Dodgeball Tournament proposed for later in the school year
October
Last afterschool Homecoming decoration work session takes place
Tickets sold in both lunches from E105 and from student volenteers in all three lunch periods in both cafeterias
Spirit week events go off "ok"
Need to be more highlighted in order to spur more involvement
Hallway decoration contest even better in its second year
Buzz makes first appearance at the Fall Pep Rally to high praise
Rain forces Homecoming floats to be destroyed and the underclass court announcements to be postponed until the Dance, although Newark wins the Homecoming Game
Need to have a rain date for float contest in case of inclement weather in the future (get contact number for each organizer)
Possibly have other clubs construct floats as well?
Have the King and Queen make an appearance at the next home game?
Building conflict causes construction of Homecoming set difficult on day of dance
"Gift wrapping" the walls a great idea
Need to make a special order with Fulton Paper ahead of time (one roll per light)
Avoid arches in the future due to flimsy and time consuming construction
Dance itself goes very well
Outsourcing of refreshments to Key Club and coat check to Theatre works extremely well for all concerned (and no lost items this year)
DJ has less complaints then in previous years
Need to put tape down on the floor for Homecoming court walk (or use bleachers)
November
T-Shirts are "ordered" by Vice President but they never arrive
Yearbook pictures are taken for club
Student and Faculty Dodgeball tournaments are decided upon and rules are established
Newark: Survivor idea is cancelled for this year, may turn into a "team building exercise" for student groups in May
December
Poster construction for Dodgeball Tournaments
Team sign-ups start for Students
Team sign-ups start and end for Faculty (45 end up participating in "evened-out" teams)
Shirts for Dodgeball are ordered prior to break
Order a few extra shirts in all colors and sizes
Confirm students involved in Student Government and what equals getting a shirt
Do not send final email to both staff and students (smack talk rule)
January
Student Dodgeball Tournament a roaring success
End sign-up a little earlier to avoid confusion
Have a team form and an individual form for each member
Have a "rule-day" before the actual tournament
Move proceedings to the West Gym next year in order to eliminate standing - particularly by the doors
Faculty Tournament was better than past year
Turn-out somewhat better - possibly switch locations with Student Tournament (move to East Gym)
No admission was a good idea...students much more into it
Took place on a half-day at noon
Possibly having an announcer try-out?
February
Planning for Newark Survivor and Sadie Hawkins Dance took place
Date for Sadie Hawkins Dance - Friday, March 9th (7-10 pm in East Gym)
Website constructed
Key Club to help with Refreshments
Police, Good Vibrations (DJ), building usage reserved and chaperone sign-up takes place
Tickets printed
Note: Possibly ask for parent volunteers for chaperones next year thru the NHS Newsletter
Date for Newark Survivor - Friday, April 27th (3-7 pm in West Gym, A-106, E105)
Website constructed
Sign-up sheet created and posted
Faculty Team was asked to form before announcements made to student body
Successful - team constructed before the end of February
Dr. Caulk leaves the school, Mr. Jezyk named Acting Principal
Students made aware of PEP plan, possible involvement in school policy in 2007-2008
March
Sadie Hawkins Dance canceled due to low ticket sales
Only 12 tickets sold in three days
All concerned parties were notified on Wednesday afternoon
More promotion next year? Possibly make the dance take place in December or January instead? Conflict with Spring Sports, lack of pep rally, drama production, SATs and DSTPs.
April
Newark Survivor extremely successful with five teams of 10 competing in the competition
$500 prize good way to attract attention
Lower the amount of students per team (allowing people to "double dip" if they wish too)
Change the Endurance Challenge to holding books instead of sitting
Possibly get rid of the Sudoku Challenge and replace it with Scrabble?
Possibly get rid of DDR due to complicated nature/hard to visualize
Have tiebreakers ready and available for other activities
Have "Student Government" security presence to clear floor
May
Student Government officer elections took place May 31st and June 1st
10 hours = trip qualification / t-shirt for help ideas announced
Homecoming Theme 2007 was selected - Polynesian Luau - by majority vote at the May 29th meeting
